Some Datejusts are easy to walk past. This one isn’t.
The black dial on the ref. 16014 is one of those combinations that works almost unreasonably well. Where a silver or white dial reads as classic, black reads as something else entirely — sharper, more graphic, more deliberate. The applied baton markers cut bright lines across the darkness. The white gold hands hold their edge. The Rolex crown sits at 12 in clean white. Against the fluted white gold bezel, the contrast is quietly spectacular.
The 36mm Oyster case presents beautifully, with sharp lugs — a detail that matters enormously on this reference and one that is almost always the first casualty of a polishing wheel. The 18k white gold fluted bezel retains its full milling, crisp and well-defined, sitting almost invisibly against the steel case in certain light — which is precisely what makes the white gold Rolesor configuration so compelling. You have to look twice to notice it. Then you can’t stop noticing it.
The acrylic crystal is in excellent condition — clear, well-seated, with the characteristic warmth and slight dome that sapphire never quite replicates on a watch like this. The Cyclops magnifier over the date window at 3 o’clock is clear and well-bonded.
The Jubilee bracelet is the correct pairing for this reference and this period, and it shows beautifully here. Five-link, with polished centre links and brushed outer links — elegant in a way that the Oyster bracelet simply isn’t. The Rolex crown clasp is clean and functioning well.
Inside runs the calibre 3035 — the movement that defined the transitional generation of Datejust, introducing the quickset date function and beating at 28,800vph for a smoother seconds hand than anything that came before it. It is one of Rolex’s most dependable calibres, and it powers this watch exactly as it should.
This example comes complete with its original Rolex inner and outer box and the Attestation de Chronomètre papers — sold originally through a Hong Kong authorised dealer. A full-set 16014 with a black dial in this case condition is the kind of piece Lorièn Watches in Amsterdam is built around: original, complete, and entirely honest.
