The sigma dial is one of the details that separates a Datejust collector from a casual buyer. Most people walk straight past it. The ones who know, stop.
The sigma (σ) symbols flanking the “T Swiss T” text at the base of this dial are the tell — a small but significant indicator that the applied baton markers are set in solid gold rather than steel. It changes the quality of the light across the dial entirely. Where steel markers reflect cool and sharp, gold carries a warmth that shifts beautifully with the angle and the hour. On a silver sunburst pie-pan like this one, the effect is quietly extraordinary.
The pie-pan dial itself is the other thing worth understanding. The outer edge sits fractionally lower than the centre — a subtle stepped profile that gives the dial a three-dimensional quality unique to this generation of Datejust. Combined with the sunburst finishing, the silver surface moves constantly under light, never flat, never static.
The tritium lume plots have aged to a warm honey-amber patina — the natural result of decades of slow, undisturbed ageing. Each plot sits proud of the dial, domed and intact, the colour even and consistent across all positions. The tritium hands match. This is what the watch looked like when time was the only thing acting on it.
The 18k white gold fluted bezel frames everything with crisp, well-defined milling. The 36mm Oyster case presents well, with the characteristic beefy lug profile of the early 1601 generation. The acrylic crystal is in good condition, with the slight dome and optical warmth that belongs to this era of Rolex.
The Jubilee bracelet is correct for the reference — five-link, with polished centre links and the characteristic rolled construction of this period. The bracelet closes with the period Rolex clasp, functioning correctly.
Inside runs the calibre 1570, the workhorse automatic movement that powered the Datejust through most of its long 1601 production run — reliable, well-proven, and entirely appropriate for a watch of this age and character.
The ref. 1601 sigma dial is the version of the Datejust that collectors at Lorièn Watches in Amsterdam return to again and again. Not the loudest watch in the room — but the one you keep looking at.
