Rolex Datejust 1601 — Steel & White Gold, Onyx Hour Markers, Full Set, 1972
Some watches tick through decades and arrive on the other side looking like they never left the display case. This Rolex Datejust ref. 1601 is one of those watches — presented complete with its original box, chronometer certificate, “Your Rolex Oyster” booklet, and translation booklet, in a state of preservation that stops you in your tracks. Whether it goes straight onto the wrist or into a collection, for a watch that has been around for the better part of five decades, the condition is simply remarkable.
The 1601 ran from 1959 through the late 1970s and defined what a gentleman’s sports watch could be: 36mm in Oystersteel, a fluted white gold bezel, and a dial that rewards close attention. This example carries the onyx hour markers — applied batons set with deep black onyx — which give the silver dial a graphic sharpness that the standard polished steel indices simply cannot match. The contrast between the sunburst silver ground and the dark onyx is as crisp today as it was when this watch left Geneva. Hands and all printed text on the dial are in outstanding condition throughout.
The case retains excellent definition across its lugs and flanks, with the characteristic Datejust profile — integrated Jubilee bracelet flowing naturally from the case shoulders. The Jubilee ref. 62510H wears with minimal stretch and presents beautifully on both the brushed center links and polished outer edges. The signed crown is original, the acrylic crystal is clear, and the cyclops lens magnifies the date crisply at three o’clock.
Inside runs the calibre 1570, Rolex’s evolution of the legendary 1560 series. Self-winding via the Perpetual rotor, COSC-certified, and fitted with a Glucydur balance and Microstella regulation screws. This movement has earned its reputation across millions of watches and decades of daily use — and this particular example runs with the authority you would expect.
What elevates this piece beyond simply a very clean 1601 is the completeness of its set. The dark green leather outer box with gold-tone badge, the cream-coloured “Your Rolex Oyster” booklet, the official Attestation de Chronomètre Officiel from Rolex Genève-Bienne, and the multilingual translation booklet are all present. Finding a 1601 in this condition is notable. Finding one with its full original paperwork and box — in like-new preservation — is genuinely rare.
