Rolex Explorer II 16570 “Polar” 1996
The Rolex Explorer II reference 16570 represents the evolution of Rolex’s tool watch philosophy into the modern era. Introduced in 1989 as the successor to the 16550, the reference brought a more refined case, improved reliability and the robust calibre 3185 GMT movement.
The white “Polar” dial became one of the most recognizable configurations of the Explorer II. With its high contrast black markers and distinctive red 24-hour hand, the watch was designed for legibility in extreme environments. Originally created for cave explorers and polar expeditions, the fixed 24-hour bezel allowed wearers to distinguish day from night in places where natural light disappears.
By the mid-1990s, the 16570 had become one of Rolex’s most functional sports models. A clean 40mm case, sapphire crystal and independent GMT hand made it both practical and durable.
